UPDATE:  Change of date for program...Mark your calendar for

Friday, May 11th.  We will be performing our second grade program "This is America," at 9:00am and 2:00pm.

This week in Language Arts we will finish Unit 5.  In this unit, students will compare and contrast two texts on the same topic, identify the argument or opinion of the author and find the reasons supporting the opinion citing evidence from the text, ask and answer questions from the story, "My Father's Dragon," and state an opinion about "My Father's Dragon" using reasons cited from the text.

Students will learn to identify, determine the meaning,  and use shades of meaning words.  These words mean almost the same, but they have vary in strength.  Example:  smart, intelligent, brilliant, genius.

Writing:  Students will write opinion paragraphs and include 3 reasons and examples of their opinion.

Spelling: No spelling this week.  Please study all 10 words each night to prepare for the test on Friday.  Additionally, students will have written spelling assignments to help them achieve the correct spelling of these words on the test and in their writing. **Each day, (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) students will choose one spelling homework assignment from the spelling menu.  They may not do the same assignment twice within the same week.  Use any type of paper that you have at home to complete the assignment.  If you need paper, students can take a lined paper from our drawer each day, but it won't automatically be given to each student each day.

Math:  We will continue Topic 15:  Measuring Length.  Students will learn to measure in inches, centimeters, feet, and yards.  Students will learn to add and subtract in measurement.

Social Studies:  We will continue the unit, People in the Marketplace.  In this unit, students will learn anout producers and consumers.  They will learn about earning income and paying for items they need and want.  Students will participate in a marketplace project in which they will work in a small group to produce a product or service to sell to other students.  Information on the project was sent home last week.  Students have been placed in groups.

Character Education:  Students will continue Unit 4 with a lesson on solving problems.

PE:  We will be having PE everyday except Tuesday.  Please make sure to have your student wear appropriate shoes to run and excercise in. :)

  • Internet Learning Websites

Please make sure your student is utilizing the Internet learning websites that were handed out during Parent-Teacher conferences.  These websites, especially JiJi Math, IXL, and All the Right Type are very beneficial to the students' academic progress.  These sites are fun so the students should enjoy it! :)

The Book Club flyers I'll be sending home each month are full of just-right, affordable books and Storia™ eBooks for every age and reading level.

  • pop top Collecting Pop Tops

Rhodes students are collecting the pull top rings that are on aluminum can drinks.  Pull off the top ring of your soda cans and send them in to school.  When we save these, it raises funds for people with sick children to stay at the Ronald McDonald house near the hospital in Los Angeles.  This enables parents to be nearby their children receiving treatment in the hospital.  It's a very worthy cause, and I would like to have our students bring in as many as they can.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.  Thank you!
