Welcome to Mrs. Mehaffie's Culinary Arts Classroom.
Everyone has experience with food. You eat food several times a day. You may purchase it at supermarkets, vending machines, and restaurants. You may even prepare food in a restaurant or at home. Even though everyone has had experiences with food, many people do not understand the surprising changes that occur when foods are cooked. Why do apples turn brown when they are cut? What does the maillard effect have on your food? How do microwave ovens cook your food? To answer these questions, you need to know the scientific principles related to food. Food science is the study of how and why foods change when they are prepared and stored, and how these changes can be controlled. Many concepts from chemistry, biology, and physics are applied to the study of foods. The study of Nutrition is a main component of food science and culinary, which involves an analysis of food components (water, carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins, and minerals) and how the body uses these nutrients to sustain life and health. Culinary class will give you the answers to these questions and more.
