     This is an elective course that encompasses the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools, and it is designed to introduce the fundamentals of art through the exploration and study of different media, art techniques, critique, and history. Art goes beyond art production. It involves problem solving, critical thinking, art history, writing components, class discussions, technology, and visual literacy.

    Visual Arts & Performing Arts Standards

    The four core standards are as follows:

    • CREATING
      • Anchor Standard 1:Generate and conceptualize artists ideas and work.
      • Anchor Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
      • Anchor Standard 3: Refine and complete artistic work.
    • PERFORMING/PRESENTING/PRODUCING
      • Anchor Standard 4: Select, analyze and interpret artistic work for presentation.
      • Anchor Standard 5: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
      • Anchor Standard 6: Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
    • RESPONDING
      • Anchor Standard 7: Perceive and analyze artistic work.
      • Anchor Standard 8: Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
      • Anchor Standard 9: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    • CONNECTING
      • Anchor Standard 10; Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
      • Anchor Standard 11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding. 

    Course Overview

    Throughout this course, students will be able to:

    • Learn about the Elements of Art and Principles of Design
    • Be exposed and practice fundamental art techniques.
    • Practice 21 Century Skills such as: create, persevere, envision, be patient, problem solve, manage time, critically think, be productive, advocate, and show craftsmanship.
    • Explore the impact of Visual Art’s on society
    • Visual Art careers
    • Social justice issues and how art creates a voice to create awareness of social issues.

    Instructions

    Instruction: Art projects will require students to use academic skills in language arts, math, social sciences, science, and technology as well as their personal experiences in daily life and their environment.  

    Assignments and Due Dates  will be provided daily during class meetings. 

    No extra credit opportunities are available. 

    Students will have the opportunity to work during class to complete assignments. 

    Any uncomplete work due to student not managing his/her time properly during class MUST be completed as homework, which will be due at the beginning of class the next day.
