Chino Hills High School's Solar Cup Team Wins Big

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California recognized students from Chino Hills High School's Solar Cup Team during its virtual awards ceremony held on Thursday, June 10th. Team members, who are co-sponsored by the Inland Empire Utilities Agency (IEUA) and the city of Chino Hills, were among 300 students recognized during the ceremony.

The Solar Cup is a competition that requires students from high schools across the region to work together to complete a variety of activities and challenges. Participating virtually, Chino Hills High School students competed in everything from robotics to online gaming development, and so much more. The final challenge included creating a solar powered vehicle made of completely recycled materials, which was then entered into a virtual 20-foot race where winners were selected based off of design creativity and speed.

Working together over the last several months, our Huskies were able to see their hard work pay off by winning 9 awards out of the 10 challenges. Final rankings for the Solar Cup Team include:

  • Onshpae Challenge - 3rd place
  • Solar Vehicle Challenge - 2nd place
  • Public Service Announcement - 2nd place
  • Blender Challenge - Greater Time Commitment - 1st place
  • Robotics Challenge - Greater Time Commitment - 1st place
  • Electronics Challenge - 1st place
  • Green Career Challenge - 1st place

In addition to the team also bringing home the Teamwork Award, CHHS junior, Samantha Olivar, enjoys bragging rights for winning the Spirit of Solar Cup Award. Congratulations on the success of both the Solar Cup team and the program advisor, Mr. Keane Misawa.
