Competition a learning experience for Chino Hills High's Hospitality and Tourism Academy students
Chino Hills High students had a good time competing recently in the California ProStart Cup, a high-stakes culinary arts and business competition presented by BJ’s Restaurants and hosted by the California Restaurant Association Foundation.
The event was attended by more than 250 students from throughout California and was held in Pomona. It had three competitions: culinary, management, and innovation, for a chance to win scholarships. Keynote speaker was Chef Jet Tila of television’s “Chopped,” “Rachael Ray Show,” and “Guy’s Grocery Games.”
“(The Chino Hills High students) didn’t place, but they did learn a lot about developing a business plan,” said their advisor, Chino Hills High culinary teacher Jennell Acker. “They had to present their proposal to a panel of 15 industry professionals and had to utilize critical thinking skills during the trade show.” Acker said the students – all 10th graders from the school’s Business Academy of Hospitality and Tourism -- were the youngest team at the competition.
