Welcome to Mrs. Schaffer's 2024/2025 Team
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you, and your child to my class. Yay! A meaningful year of growing as learners and citizens is ahead of us. Please know that you will be in a loving, safe, FUN, and rigorous environment. To give you a little background information on me.....My name is Georgina Schaffer and I am thrilled to be your 6th grade math teacher. This is my ninth year at BRE. I went to Walnut High School and am a Cal Poly Pomona alumni with a Master's Degree from St. Mary's University. I have taught 5-8th grade math for 28 of my 30 years and I truly love this age group. Besides teaching I have also been the math dean and math coach at my previous school. I began my teaching career in the Hacienda La Puente school district. I then moved to Minnesota where I continued to teach. In 2015 we moved back to California to be closer to family and to escape the long winters. I have a 22 year old son named Henry and a 20 year old daughter named Hailey and a very loving and wonderful husband named Joey. In my free time I love the outdoors, sports, games, reading, traveling, trying new restaurants, and simply spending time with my family.
Building strong relationships with my students is my ultimate goal. As the school year progresses, I am excited to watch your child grow not only academically but also in development of their self esteem, positive behavior, study habits, and self' discipline. As a way of "joining forces" to educate your child, I invite you to tell me ANYTHING you think would be helpful to caring for and teaching your child. If you have any concerns or information to share...please provide any words of wisdom in a note, email, etc.
A big thank you in advance for your support and interest in our class. It is my priority to provide your student with a successful and memorable learning environment. I want them to feel confident in themselves as a person and in their skills as a student. They will leave BRE being thoroughly prepared for junior high.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Georgina Schaffer
Communication
As a parent myself, I strongly believe in communication betweenstudents, parents, and myself. If at any time you need to speak
to me please don't hesitate to contact me via class dojo,
with a note, or with an email. I will get back to you as soon as I can. My class
phone doesn't always notify me of messages so class dojo is best.

Math Philosophy
When it comes to math, less is more. You will not see a lot of homework because
if students can show me their understanding in 8 problems, then obviously 30
questions weren't needed. If students are struggling with a short assignment
then they need more help from me. We will be using the 8 Mathematical practices
this year to develop strong mathematical minds. I want students to truly
understand the math and not just memorize rules and follow procedures. I
work a lot on mental math strategies that help students estimate whether
their answer seems logical or not. In the real world we rely heavily on these skills.
