Positive Behavior Intervention Support

Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a system that emphasizes setting clear behavioral expectations for our students, just as we set clear academic expectations.  It is designed to establish ongoing behavioral support to our students. Rather than a set curriculum, intervention, or practice, it is a method of supporting our students through assessment, reflection, and feedback on their behavior.

PBIS focus, is on preventing poor behavior through the setting of clear expectations, educating students on expectations and procedures, and rewarding their success.  In this manner, students build the motivation to succeed on their own.

There are three different Tiers of PBIS.

The first Tier is for all Briggs students and revolves around the school wide expectations of being Responsible, Respectful and Safe.  We teach these behaviors to our students through our First 24 Days of School lessons, our Panther Perk rewards system, and our SecondSTEP lessons.

The second Tier of PBIS is geared to a much smaller group of students who need more individualized behavioral support.  Small group counseling sessions, our Check-In Check-Out program, and our Study Skills classes are some of the second Tier strategies.  This level of assistance is much more specific to students in need and oftentimes requires a parent conference to proceed.

The third Tier of PBIS is for the few students who need support beyond Tier 2.  This level of PBIS can involve 3rd party entities, like Chino Human Services and Occupational Therapy.

Students in  Tiers 2 and 3 are served interventions only as long as needed, and can change tiers after a short time.

If you are a parent and feel that your student would benefit from either Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions, please fill out the form below.

This year we have multiple Tier 2 interventions available on our campus.  The interventions include CICO, PALS and small group counseling services.

Our counselors have serviced 70 students through CICO, small group and PALS this school year. 68 students have exited, giving us an exit rate of 97%. We have seen the direct impact of our Tier 2 interventions affect academic achievement on campus, with 96% of the junior high student body achieving a 2.0 or better GPA.

  • LYLE S. BRIGGS K-8 PBIS GOLD STATUS

    Posted by Diana on 2/7/2021

On behalf of the California PBIS Coalition, Lyle S. Briggs K-8 school is recognized for the successful PBIS implementation at the Gold level. Lyle S. Briggs K-8 has been implementing Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS), which supports the recognition of positive behaviors while intervening to correct problematic behaviors. This school-wide effort is a collaborative, research-based approach used to develop a positive culture in our school and the community. PBIS emphasizes reinforcement of positive behaviors thereby promoting meaningful and long-lasting behaviors needed throughout life. The overall goal is to build a safe environment in which positive behavior is most effective. Positive relationships, with peers and adults, allow for more academic instruction and overall success. We are continuing the theme for our Panthers of “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe” as the basis for examining all behaviors at Lyle S. Briggs K-8 and beyond. This is our fifth year of commitment to PBIS, and we invite our parents and community to recognize students exhibiting positive behaviors.
