  • Possible Jr. High Elective Options for the 25-26 School Year

    Actual course offerings will be based on staffing and scheduling availability each year.

     

    ASB (8th Leadership & 7th Renaissance): This course is by application only. https://www.chino.k12.ca.us/domain/9950

    Band or Advanced Band (7th & 8th Grade): These courses introduce the student to the fundamental components of music and are aligned to the State Standard for Visual and Performing Arts. In the Beginning Band and Advanced Band courses, students will perform a repertoire of musical styles on an instrument with expression, tone quality, and articulation individually and in group settings. This may include compositions in double, triple, mixed and compound meters. Students will understand how music influences the various cultures of our society. Students will be required to participate in all performances. Instruments being offered include: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. 

    Computer Science Discoveries (7th & 8th Grade): An introductory computer science course that enables students to explore technology and how it can be utilized to solve real-world problems while using communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Students will also learn about computing systems, data, web development, and coding. 

    Principles of Biomedical Sciences (8th Grade): This course presents an introduction to the biomedical sciences with emphasis on careers, health and nutrition, and physiology of the human body. This course provides an introduction to the biomedical sciences through exciting “hands-on” projects and problems. 

    Performing Arts Wheel (7th & 8th): This pathway includes Drama, School Publication, & Creative Writing.  This will introduce students to the fundamentals of acting as an art form and focus on the development of journalism skills and the technical skills involved in publishing (i.e., writing for a newspaper, layout procedures, digital graphic organization, etc.).  In addition, it will introduce students to the fundamentals of creative writing applications and characteristics. Students will learn a variety of writing styles and learn how to write plays, as well as short stories and poetry for magazines. To request this elective option, please select "Drama" as the elective.

    Visual Arts Wheel (7th & 8th): This pathway includes Art, Intro to Animation, & Art Appreciation.  This course introduces the student to the fundamental components of art and exposes students to the history of animation as an art form. To request this elective option, please select "Art" as the elective.

    21st Century Skills Wheel (7th & 8th): This pathway includes Study Skills, 21st Century, & Civic Literacy. This course provides students with instruction on how to study, how to become effective test takers, and acquire good study habits. They will learn techniques in taking notes, working independently, managing time, and studying. The second trimester is a project-based course that seeks to provide hands-on learning opportunities in which students work collaboratively to identify problems, conduct research, evaluate information, and develop solutions. With teacher guidance, students create their own learning experiences aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).  The final trimester is designed to empower students with social tools that are necessary for success in a diverse, democratic society. This course will emphasize personal responsibility, civic duty, and the value of a common culture/shared heritage. To request this elective option, please select "Study Skills" as the elective.
