Onyeka Okongwu is a former Rhodes Scholar. After leaving Rhodes, he took the normal path of Magnolia Junior High and then high school. But unlike most students, he went to play basketball at USC and is now playing for the Atlanta Hawks. Onyeka took time to show appreciation for Rhodes and came back to hang out with our scholars. We were very blessed and grateful.
Rhodes Pep Club is our school's parent organization. It is a dedicated group of parents who do amazing things for our school and scholars and are always welcoming new members. Below is a link to their October newsletter.
Volunteering at Rhodes:
Rhodes is an elite elementary school with a tremendous history. One of the things that makes our school so amazing is the involvement of parents on campus. Pep Club is our parent organization that is the backbone of our success. They would love to have more and new parents join them. The following QR code gives information on how to help and join.
Chromebooks
Beginning in 5th grade, each CVUSD student is assigned their own Chromebook. Students will keep this until 8th grade, and it will be taken home and used for homework. Students and parents are responsible for both the computer and charger. The district is offering an insurance protection plan. I have attached this opportunity here: CVUSD Insurance Protection Plan

Yoga Balls in the Classroom
Sitting at a desk for 6 1/2 hours per day is difficult for many adults and a near impossibility for some students. A University of Chicago Research report showed gains in both academics and health. For these reasons, students in the class can choose chairs or exercise balls for their desks. So, when you see your kid bouncing lightly in their seat, know there is some science behind the decision.
Debate
Thirteen years ago, Mr. Fjeldsted began the debate program at Rhodes. Mr. Rossen is proud to carry on the tradition. The Rhodes Debate Team meets every Wednesday before/after school. We have two competitions each year, with seven schools in Chino Valley participating. Please see Mr. Rossen if your child is interested in participating. For debate we use an App called Band to make announcements. You can join the Band App here: https://band.us/n/a5a6Aep474Y7H
Green Teams
Human impact on the environment is an essential piece of the science curriculum in all elementary grades. Mr. Rossen runs Green Teams. This is where children can learn about their impact on the world around them. Students also run the Rhodes recycling program and help classrooms and the school save energy. Meetings are before school on Friday, and students from all grades are welcome to attend.
Band
Being in band has a plethora of benefits for students. Many students joined band in 5th grade, but that is not needed to do band in 6th grade. Information will go home early in the school year, and you should highly consider putting your child in band.
