Canyon Hils - Physical Education
The ultimate aim of our Physical Education Program is to provide students with the necessary skills to live healthy, active lifestyles. Regular involvement in physical activity has been proven to increase test performance, raise self-esteem, reduce the incidence of life threatening diseases and produce a positive impact on the social and emotional well-being of an individual. Our PE staff believes that each and every student can achieve excellence regardless of size, coordination, body type or other physical capabilities.
The Physical Education program at Canyon Hills JHS is a well-organized, sequential program that allows the student to develop the necessary skills to build upon in subsequent years as given in the California State Framework. 7th grade students progress through a variety of units in individual sports, team sport lead-up skills, coordination development, and cultural dance. Such sports and/or activities include: table tennis, bocce ball, diabolo juggling, Frisbee/disc sports (ultimate), and volley tennis. Our 8th grade curriculum places a greater emphasis on the skills necessary to participate in team sports, including but not limited to: basketball, angle ball, floor hockey, football, volleyball, strength/weightlifting, and square dance. Beyond developing the necessary skills for these more traditional sports, our physical education program also incorporates an academic component by learning the rules and regulations of the various sports' and activities. These skills are presented through cooperative activities which fosters the students' ability to be a positive member of a team. Canyon Hills students are required to maintain and utilize the material and instruction from their Sportfolio booklet. This book contains muscle and bone anatomy, social skill development, collecting and setting personal fitness goals, and charting their personal fitness data for the President’s Challenge and State Fitness Gram. All fitness runs are conducted once a week and are required to be recorded in the Sportfolio.
Our goal is to create an array of enjoyable, challenging, and meaningful activities that will provide the building blocks necessary to prepare them for High School Physical Education, and beyond.
