AVID’s Mission Statement:
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID Program Description:
AVID stands for “Advancement Via Individual Determination” and is a program designed to help prepare students for advanced coursework and success in a four- year university program. AVID students are students in the academic middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically, and the structure of the AVID elective can help them perform better and achieve their goals.
What AVID Is:
- an in-school academic support program for grades 6 – 12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success
- offered during an elective period for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle
- implemented school-wide and district-wide
What AVID Is Not:
- a remedial program
- a school within a school
- a quick fix (students should be motivated)
