Test Taking Tips
Before the test:
- PAY ATTENTION:
Listen attentively in class when information is being presented. Ask questions for clarification and understanding.
- STAY ORGANIZED:
Stay organized by knowing what is expected of you for each class and have your needed materials with you.
- COMPLETE & SUBMIT YOUR WORK:
In order to avoid falling behind and having your work pile up, stay on top of your assignments. If you get behind, talk with your teachers to see if they will accept late work and come up with a plan on how to catch up.
- STUDY EACH NIGHT:
Plan to study a little bit each night for a few days or weeks before a test to reduce test anxiety and to help with memory retention.
- REVIEW CLASS NOTE & HANDOUTS:
It may help to organize the class notes and information into a single outline listing the key points and then filling in the details about each key point.
During the test:
- READ & FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS:
Carefully review the whole test before you start and follow the directions.
- PLAN YOUR TIME:
Plan more time for essay questions than for short-answer, true/false, and multiple-choice questions.
- DON’T SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON ANY ONE QUESTION:
If a question is too hard, move on and return to it later if you can.
- DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR WORK IF YOU HAVE TIME:
Only change your answers if you know you are wrong. Otherwise, don’t second-guess yourself too much. Fix any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes for essays and double-check calculations.
