    1. Why does Chino Valley Unified School District need to teach sexual health education?
      California Assembly Bill 329 (AB329), Education Code 51934 requires school districts to provide comprehensive sexual health and HIV/AIDS prevention education to students in grades 7-12, including at least once in junior high and at least once in high school. The California State Board of Education requires that all instruction and materials align with the stated criteria in AB329. In compliance with AB329, the District developed Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education curriculum for junior high school students and Positive Prevention Plus, Sexual Health Education for California Youth curriculum for high school students.

    2. What grades are taught sexual health education?
      Seventh grade students are taught sexual health education as part of the science curriculum and high school students are taught sexual health education as part of the Health class curriculum.

    3. Is sexual health education curriculum taught to elementary students?
      No, sexual health education is not taught to elementary students.

    4. Are parents notified when the sexual health education portion of the curriculum will be taught?
      Yes, parents are notified at the beginning of each school year in the student handbook that is provided to each student. Notification will also be distributed to the students in their classes. Parents are also notified approximately a few weeks before the sexual health education curriculum will be taught.

    5. As a parent, can I opt my child out of the District’s Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education and Positive Prevention Plus, Sexual Health Education for California Youth curriculum?
      Yes, parents and guardians have the right to request in writing that his/her child not attend the sexual health education and HIV/AIDS prevention education of the course.

    6. As a parent, can I opt my child out of the entire Health course?
      No, parents cannot opt their child out of the entire Health course.

    7. How long is the sexual health education curriculum?
      The junior high school sexual health education curriculum last approximately 2-3 days and the high school curriculum is approximately one week.

    8. Will my child’s grade be negatively impacted if I opt him/her out?
      No, opting your child out of the sexual health education curriculum will not negatively impact his/her grade.

    9. If I opt my child out of the sexual education curriculum, what will he/she do instead?
      Students who opt out of the sexual health education curriculum will be placed in an alternative setting and work on other course material related to science and/or health.

    10. Can parents or the public review the District’s sexual health education materials?
      Yes, the District will have sexual health education curriculum materials for public viewing in the Health Services office and the Secondary Curriculum and Instruction office from July 19–August 7, 2019, as well as at the District’s Samuel R. Burton Professional Development and Media Center from August 8–15, 2019.

    11. How were the District’s sexual health education materials chosen?
      The curriculum was reviewed for suitability, compliance, and alignment with the state’s mandates for instruction by the District’s curriculum division. The curriculum materials were also reviewed by a Superintendent’s Advisory Committee and the Secondary Curriculum Coordinating Council.

    12. Who is on the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee?
      The Superintendent’s Advisory Committee is comprised of five members, one member appointed by each Board of Education member.

    13. Will the District approved curriculum be the only materials used to teach students? Are teachers allowed to bring in materials as well?
      Teachers are allowed to bring in supplemental materials, but they must align with the stated criteria in AB329.

    14. Does the District’s sexual health education curriculum include information about LGBTQ relationships and gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation?
      Yes it does.

    15. As a parent, can I opt my child out of just the portion of the sexual health education curriculum that involves gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation topics?
      No, the opt out provision applies to the entire sexual health education curriculum or the HIV/Aids Prevention education, not just portions of it.

    16. As a parent, can I opt my child out of other—non-science or non-health—courses that teach about gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation topics?
      No.

    17. I heard there is pornography in the District’s sexual health education curriculum.
      It is a lie and misleading to say that the District teaches pornography. The District is not teaching pornography. The distribution of pornography to minors is against the law and teachers would be subject to an arrest and termination if this were the case.  All the materials taught as part of the sexual health education curriculum have been approved by the State of California Board of Education and abide by State and Federal laws.
