•  Health and Wellness

Schools by themselves cannot, and should not be expected to address the nation’s most serious health and social problems. However, schools can provide a critical forum in which many agencies might work together to maintain the well-being of young people. Families, health care workers, the media, religious organizations, community organizations and students also must be systematically involved.

Under the direction of the Director of Health Services, the district Health Council plans, implements, and supports coordinated school health. The Coordinated School Health Program (CSHP) model, consists of eight interactive components.

The district Health Council is comprised of parent, school, and community members. The council meets on a quarterly basis to address selected issues. Each year the committee identifies needs, sets priorities and forms working committees to address the CSH goals, and comply with the district Wellness Policy (BP 5030). Every two years a report is made to the School Board on activities in place to fulfill requirements of the district wellness policy. Current identified needs and CSH goals include The areas that we selected to work on are (1) Health Promotion for Staff; (2) School Counseling, Psychological and Social Services and (3) Healthy School Environment, and (4) student nutrition.

Extension of the district efforts to the schools enables site-based decisions regarding how to best implement programs to meet the needs of the local community. Each school is urged to form their own health council.
