    Dear CVUSD Families and Staff,

Recently, the tranquility and positive energy of our community has been unnecessarily disrupted by an alarming number of false threats or false reports of threats that target CVUSD school campuses and offices. The frequency of these threats has increased dramatically as we struggle with the latest social media trend that is impacting communities not only throughout our state, but our nation as well.

Please impress upon students the severity of their actions and that when they report or make false threats, they:

    1.       Shatter the security of peers and our community for an immeasurable amount of time. As we watch school violence unfold in our media and listen to accounts of terrified witnesses, the anxiety that circulates throughout our community is palpable. False threats or reports of threats rob our neighbors and fellow community members of their peace and sense of safety.

    2.       Remove law enforcement and CVUSD staff from other important priorities. Numerous parties are involved with investigating each threat received and coordinating resources to ensure student and staff safety. Not only does investigating false threats remove personnel from addressing factual duties that positively impact our community, but the manpower and time associated with investigations is costly.

    3.       Undermine the urgency of emergencies. The District takes a number of precautions to help train and prepare both students and staff on how to appropriately respond to emergency situations on campus. We want to ensure that readiness to react remains robust and solid and is not negatively impacted by false threat reports or statements.

    4.       Violate the District’s Code of Conduct. I urge parents and guardians to take this opportunity to speak with their students and remind them that threats made against CVUSD offices, campuses, staff, and students are taken extremely seriously, and anyone who is determined to have made such threats, whether genuinely or in jest, face potential legal implications and/or significant consequences through our District’s Code of Conduct. One of our continued goals is to develop outstanding global citizens who positively contribute to their community and embrace responsible behaviors. False reporting or statements that threaten the safety of students, staff, and guests will not be tolerated.

I would like to thank the outstanding CVUSD staff who immediately report all threats received to law enforcement and connect with District personnel to ensure campuses are secure and the appropriate resources are employed to protect students, staff, and all guests visiting school sites. Thank you to the brave men and women of the Chino Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for promptly investigating all reported threats to determine the validity of these unfortunate intimidations. The commitment invested in protecting our students and community is, without a doubt, sincerely appreciated.

Finally, thank you parents and guardians for partnering with us to connect with students and ensure that they understand the rippling effect their actions have on the entire Chino Valley community. We are a society that thrives when we work together, and your active participation in reaching and teaching our students is greatly valued.

    Respectfully,

    Norm Enfield, Ed.D.
    Superintendent
