Please be sure that students attend school every single day!

In the event of an absence:

A parent is responsible for clearing a student's absence. The district allows the parents five days, with the date of the absence counting as the first date, to clear an absence. After five days the absence remains unverified and will count as an unexcused absence.

    An absence can be cleared:

    1. By parent calling the office, 909-591-2161, and giving the reason for the absence.

    2. The parent can write a note for the student to bring to the office the morning the student returns to school. The parent may also e-mail our Attendance Clerk at Aide_Gomez@chino.k12.ca.us

    3. The parent can report it online through the report an absence form found here.

The note / e-mail must include:

    Student's name

     Date of absence(s)

     Reason for absence(s)

    Parent's Name / Signature

**If a student tests positive for COVID-19, the parent will need to complete the Positive COVID-19 Student Attestation Form for the student to return to school.  Forms can be provided to the office in person or by emailing our Attendance Clerk at Aide_Gomez@chino.k12.ca.us.

    Requesting Homework:

A student must be out for three full days of illness before homework can be requested. The parent must call the office before 9:00 a.m. on the third day of absence to request homework, and the homework can be picked up in the office after 2:00 p.m.

    Coming to School Late:

Students are expected to be to school on time. Students who arrive late are missing important instructional time, and they are distracting to others. Students who arrive over five minutes late in the morning should be signed in by a parent/guardian. Students who are tardy to class during the day will receive 8th period detention. Students are tardy if they are not in their seat when the bell rings.

    1st tardy = Warning

     2nd tardy = Warning

    3rd tardy = 8th Period

    4th tardy = 8th Period

    5th tardy = Tardy Contract

When coming to school late due to a Dr.'s appointment the student MUST have something from the Dr. showing they had an appointment in order for the absence to be excused. If a parent signs in a student and has no verification of an appointment, the absence is considered unexcused.

If you have additional questions regarding attendance, please contact Aide Gomez, our Attendance Clerk.

    Excessive Absences & Tardies:

Excessive absences and tardies do affect attendance and will result in a referral to the School Attendance Review Team (SART) and/or School Attendance Review Board (SARB) involving the Chino Hills Sheriff. SART Truancy letters are generated after a fixed amount of unexcused absences and/or tardies.

    District Attendance Policy:

10+ excused = Req Dr. Note (Excessive excused, will result in a letter)

    1st Letter = 3 unexcused absences

2nd Letter (SART Meeting) = 6 unexcused absences

3rd Letter (SARB Hearing if necessary) = 9 unexcused absences

    Make-Up an absence:

A student now has the opportunity to make up an absence, excused or unexcused, by serving a Saturday. The absence MUST BE made up within 20 days of the original date of absence. If your student is planning to make up an absence, please call the attendance office at (909) 591-2161 (ask for Cheryl) so she can schedule your Saturday.

Students assigned a Saturday School OR if they're making up an absence are responsible for brining enough work to keep them busy for 4 hours and also a reading book should they finish early. They can also use this time to study for any upcoming exams. If they forget to bring work, OR if they don't have any work to bring, the Saturday teacher will provide enough work for them.

    Independent Study:

Independent Study can be requested (during blended learning/traditional instruction) if the student is going to be out of town for more than five school days. The parent must contact the school a minimum of seven days before the student's first day of absence. The Ind. Study Coordinator (Mr. Murillo) will gather the work and give it to the student the last day the student is in attendance. The work is due back the morning the student returns.

The student earns hours by doing the work and the absences are made-up based on the amount of work completed by the student.
