  • The Office of Child Development provides affordable, quality after school programming to approximately 1,500 CVUSD students by operating eight on-campus, before and after school enrichment programs; two before and after school enrichment programs for low-income families; six after school academic programs; one junior high after school achievement program; one full day state preschool for low-income families; and one infant/toddler childcare center for teen parents.

Supporting Student Success

  • After school programs help students make the right decisions by inspiring learning, providing a safe and supportive environment and giving students the essential support they need to succeed in school.
    • Students in high-quality after school programs have better attendance, behavior, grades and text scores compared to their non-participating peers.
    • Students in after school programs are more physically fit than students not in a program.
    • For every dollar invested in after school programs, $2.50 is saved in crime-related costs.
    • The hours between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM are the peak hours for juvenile crime.
    • Consistent participation in quality after school programs helps reduce the math achievement gap between students from lower and high-income families.
    • After school programs save at least three tax dollars for every one spent by reducing the need for remedial education and grade repetition.
    • Only 8.4 million K-12 children (15 percent) participate in an after school program.  An additional 18.5 million would participate if a quality program were available in their community.
