Intro to Design Class
Course Description and Goals:
Meets the UC/CSU “F” Visual Performing Arts requirement. Grade Level(s): 9-12. Unit Value: 5 credits per semester/10 credits total
No prerequisites for the Fall semester.
The focus of this course is to introduce students to the 3D design process, research and analysis, 3D printing, teamwork, communication methods, and technical documentation.Introduction to design gives students the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of three-dimensional graphic design and 3D printing process concepts.Introduction to design is a great class for students who have an interest in learning how 3D printers work, how to design and 3D print their own projects, essentially how to become a maker. This class is also suitable for those students who are interested in any career related to:• Engineering/design• Animation and design• 3d design• 3d printing specialist• 3d customization & prototyping• Product development.Class Objectives:
- Students will learn to use CAD programs such as Onshape and Fusion 360 through a series of hands-on projects that will cover the basics and Intermediate levels of 3D design and 3D printing.
- Students will learn the 3D printing process
- Students will learn to create and edit CAD files, as well as parts and assembly modeling.
- Students will learn through theoretical knowledge, reviewed questions, biweekly quizzes and hands-on lab projects.
Requirements: Interest in the field of 3D design, engineering and 3D printing.
Class Goals:
Upon completion of this course, the students should be able to:
- Identify all the hardware/software required to print three-dimensional objects.
- Discuss the function of different software and hardware involved in 3D printing models.
- Use the engineering design process to create prototype models.
- Create CAD design concepts, from basic sketching and modeling to advanced modeling techniques.
- Research 3D printing technology to make decisions on purchasing 3D printer equipment.
As part of this course, students learn how to work with PCs and electronics safely by following the safety standards and regulations mandated by United States Department of Labor. Syllabus may be changed and adjusted according to administrator’s review and each student’s need.
Learning Goals
- Demonstrate occupational specific communication and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrate skills in information technology field
- Demonstrate responsible work ethics
- Demonstrate effective use of technology
