Well, my normal is anything but normal.  I am surprised that I find myself busier now than I was before the pandemic.  While I am not rushing home from my work to pick up children, and I'm not playing Mommy Taxi for all my kids' activities, I am balancing teaching two 3rd graders all subjects (except PE - my husband took over PE duty), teaching a grown man how to navigate teaching Special Ed in a virtual work, calming down two dogs and a bird who are not used to having their family home all day, and teaching my three levels of English classes.  It has been strange.  I am going to open a discussion board so that you guys can share with me and others the strange and sometimes wonderful experiences that you've had while being on lockdown.

Wow! I have learned about so many apps over the last few days.  I am fortunate to have many incredible colleagues such as Mr. Gantz, Mrs. Sjol, and Ms. Cross (AHS), Mrs. Lindemulder and Ms. Kuh (CHHS), and Ms. Yu  (DAL) to plan and interact with.  We've been discussing the best possible course of action for the next few weeks.  It is important to me that those of you in AP don't just do well on the AP Test (if you elect to take it), but that all of you (10 Honors included) are also equipped with the necessary skills to be ready for the work you'll have at the next level - whether college or the next level AP class.  If you guys have any questions or just need to vent because you're stressed or bored, I'm here for you.  I am still your English teacher and I sincerely value each and every one of you  - I probably think about each of you more than you even realize.  Even those of you who sit in the back and barely speak up, and even those of you who sit up front and constantly chit chat with me, and even all of you in between.  I am here to help you.  I do have two kids, two dogs, some fish, a bird, and a husband (arguably the one requiring the most work and attention) to juggle.  But when I'm not teaching, momming, or wifing (yes, I made those up) I'm pretty much watching Netflix or some other streaming service or playing Fortnite, Minecraft, or Stardew Valley. I also sleep, but I haven't been doing much of that lately it seems.  I hope y'all are getting plenty of sleep - especially those of you who used to have to be at class by 6:30 a.m.  I'll check in later.

  • Possible Online AP Test

Posted by Laura Grissom on 3/17/2020 3:30:00 PM

It's too soon to tell if the online testing will take place.  However, I know that CollegeBoard is working hard trying to figure out how to give college credit to the people who have earned it.  If they go the online route, they may implement anti-cheating technology like the use in some college classes.  At times, you take tests while being monitored via camera (very Big Brother, but necessary).  There will most likely be a secure website where you won't be allowed to leave the testing screen, and I'm pretty sure there will be a strictly enforced time limit.  Only time will tell, but I'm sure they will try to make the testing as secure as possible.  If you guys have any questions, please reach out to me, and I will do my best to research and find the answers.

    Dear Students,

Wow.  What a crazy turn-of-events.  I never could’ve predicted this at the beginning of the year. We are now heading out into uncharted territory, but luckily, we live in an era that allows us to continue things via technology.

Now more than ever, you’ll get out of lessons what you put into them.  For the time being, I will post assignments on Monday and they will be due by Friday (you are always welcome to turn assignments in early).

I will continue to use Aeries to update grades.  If you have outstanding assignments from before we left, we will either take care of it when we return to the physical classroom, or if virtual learning is prolonged, I will figure out a comparable assignment.

School technically resumes March 30th; you are now on what is considered “prolonged Spring Break.”  I would like you to complete the first assignment (making sure you are logged onto all learning applications) by Friday.  Many of you are already set, but please take this opportunity to make sure.  I will assign this task points in either the “other” or “participation” category.

We will be continuing with the readings we started before we left the classroom.

If you have questions, please contact me.  My virtual office hours will start tomorrow (March 17th) at 9:00 a.m. (until 11:30).

    Keep safe!

    Mrs. Grissom
