Vocabulary Information
Students should study their vocabulary homework/cards Monday through Friday for 15 to 20 minutes a night. How vocabulary work is assigned. The students are given a vocabulary worksheet, and on the front of the sheet are the words, and for each word: the part of speech, the definition, a sentence (a proper sentence is provided), and the antonyms and synonyms. On the back of the worksheet, paragraphs are provided with the vocabulary words missing, and a word bank with the possible vocabulary words (vocabulary fill-in). Below the paragraphs, a group of incomplete sentences using the vocabulary words are provided, which (on a separate sheet of paper) the student must then complete (vocabulary sentences). In addition to the vocabulary worksheet, a blank chart is provided to the students; the students will use the information from the vocabulary worksheet to complete the vocabulary chart (vocabulary chart). For each of the words, student must create a 3x5 flash card that lists: the word, the definition, the part of speech, a sentence, and the antonyms and synonyms (vocabulary cards). The activities listed above are followed by a cumulative vocabulary test (cumulative--meaning that words from a previous test can be on any of the subsequent tests).
The vocabulary assignments are all given out at the same time, but collected or checked in the following sequence: vocabulary chart, vocabulary cards, vocabulary fill-in, and vocabulary sentences. The assignments are usually collected one or more days apart over approximately one and a half weeks. During this collection process, the students are working on and completing the assignments throughout the week, so they will gain experience using the words. In addition, students should be studying their words using their flash cards. The use of flash cards should occur every night, Monday though Friday, and students should spend between 15-20 minutes every night studying the flash cards to keep with the demands of their vocabulary assignments.
