Ten CVUSD Schools Recognized for Implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Support

  • Ten Chino Valley Unified School District schools have been recognized with silver and bronze medals by the California PBIS Coalition for implementing features of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at their campuses during the 2016-2017 school year.  Eagle Canyon Elementary in Chino Hills, Walnut Avenue Elementary and Briggs Fundamental (K-8) in Chino, and Liberty Elementary and Woodcrest Junior High in Ontario earned silver designations.  Cattle Elementary in Chino, Butterfield Ranch, Country Springs, Glenmeade and Rolling Ridge elementary schools in Chino Hills earned bronze recognitions.

PBIS is a systems-based, multi-tiered framework that aims to help improve academics, reduce problem behavior, increase attendance, reduce bullying, and improve social and emotional competency of students.  Schools earn medals based on several factors, including having formal committee meetings at the school sites to work on Positive Behavior Interventions and Support; posting expectations for behavior on campus, in student handbooks, and in school policies; training staff members on PBIS practices and putting those practices in action; teaching students about academic and social behaviors in the classroom and at other campus settings; getting students and their families involved in the process through surveys and meetings; and using data gleaned from the process to improve student behavior and academic issues.

Chino Valley Unified School District Board of Education will honor the schools at its 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017 meeting at the District Office, 5130 Riverside Drive, Chino. Additionally, the honorees, along with other statewide school winners, will be recognized at the 2nd Annual California PBIS Coalition Conference in Sacramento on Oct. 11 and 12. Among the PBIS framework features are defining and teaching positive social expectations, acknowledging positive behavior, providing consistent consequences for problem behavior, collecting and using data to make decisions regarding student behavior, and providing interventions to students who need it. All CVUSD elementary schools, K-8 schools, and junior highs are currently using the PBIS framework. CVUSD High schools will implement PBIS this coming school year.
