Don Lugo High journalism teacher Annette Deming chosen for national award

  • Congratulations to Don Lugo High School teacher Annette Deming who learned recently that she is one of four teachers from across the nation to receive the Journalism Education Association’s Rising Star Award, recognizing commitment to scholastic journalism and student media advising.

Deming is an English teacher and advisor for both Don Lugo’s digital student newspaper, Quest News, and drama club.

“Walking into the Quest Newsroom, one is instantly impressed by the level of student involvement and enthusiasm,” nominator Stephen Slagle of California Journalism Educators, said. “It starts with Annette, but that enthusiasm is reflected by everyone involved with Quest News.”

Deming’s students have won numerous journalism awards and recognized with invitations to submit their writing to the High School Insider branch of the Los Angeles Times and for internships at the Chino Champion newspaper. In April, Quest reporter Hailey Scott took first place in opinion writing, and reporter Johnny Palavacino won honorable mention in photojournalism at the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association Journalism Convention in Seattle, where Deming chaperoned 13 of her Journalism students.
