Chino Invitational Band Review & Field Tournament Nov. 4

  • Marching bands from 56 Southern California schools will compete in the 47th Annual Chino Invitational Band Review & Field Tournament this Saturday (Nov. 4) in Chino.

The event is hosted by Chino High’s 77th Cavalry Marching Band.

This year’s Invitational is dedicated to Chino Valley Unified School District Superintendent Wayne Joseph, who plans to retire from the District next spring, and who formerly served as a principal at Chino High. A dedication page in the Invitational’s program states that “Mr. Joseph has been a constant supporter of student music programs in the Chino Valley Unified School District and has been a faithful spectator at the Chino Invitational Band Review each year.”

A morning field show at 8:00 a.m. will feature 12 high school bands in the 1A, 2A, and 3A divisions at the Chino High Stadium, corner of Park Place and Benson Avenue in Chino.

The Band Review parade will feature 45 bands from high schools and middle schools. It begins at noon on Riverside Drive and 11th Street in Chino. The parade will head west along Riverside Drive, turn north on 10th Street and then east on Park Place, in front of Chino High.

A 14-judge panel from the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) will evaluate the bands on Riverside Drive.

A separate “Show Off Area” is designated at the end of the parade route in front of Chino High. In that non-adjudicated area, the bands have the option of performing any music and in any performance style they think will impress their peers. The Invitational is one of the few competitions that provides bands with an opportunity to actually watch other bands compete. The Show-Off Area has been a hallmark of the event since the first Invitational in October 1971, its organizers said.

An evening field show at 5:30 p.m. will feature 13 larger marching bands in the 4A, 5A, and 6A divisions.

Both field shows will conclude with award ceremonies.

Woodcrest Junior High Marching Band and Chino High’s 77th Cavalry Marching Band are the only Chino Valley Unified School District bands to appear in the Invitational. As host band, Chino High will receive scores, but cannot compete in the SCSBOA-sanctioned contest.

Admission to the Band Review parade is free.

General admission to the field tournaments is $10, $8 for students with current photo identification, and senior citizens ages 60 and older. Accompanied children 5 and younger will be admitted free. Ticket holders will be admitted to both the morning and evening field tournaments.
