    Dear CVUSD Community,

We are at the end of the 2019-2020 school year and there are so many thoughts and emotions surrounding our journey together. We have had to pivot more than once these past few months, and our teachers, staff and administrators have stepped up and learned to teach during the challenges of a global pandemic. Through it all, our students have adapted remarkably - well beyond their years - sacrificing much for the greater good. Our senior students in particular have learned to bear the brunt of societal responsibility, making do with what they could during their last months of high school. To say that I am proud of our students is an understatement, as nothing I could have imagined could have come close to just how well they have responded to everything life has asked of them.

Our school year may be ending, but our hard work and journey together is nowhere near a conclusion. I know that first on everyone’s minds is what next school year will look like for our students. While no decisions have yet been made, my staff and I have been working to look at all options available within the guidelines set by our local public health officials. Our Board of Education will have a study session reviewing these options on June 16, 2020. Rest assured that whatever the District determines, it will be in the best interest of our students and with the goal of continuing to provide them the excellent education for which our District is known. When a decision is made, I will let you know right away.

As you have no doubt heard on the news, the economic impacts due to COVID-19 are being felt globally, statewide, as well as in our local community. On Thursday, May 14, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed cuts of up to ten (10) percent of school districts’ Local Control Funding Formula budgets. The California Legislature has until June 15 to pass a balanced budget, at which time we will know the full impact to CVUSD. However, all indications are that we will be facing significant budget difficulties in the next couple of years. Working collaboratively, ACT and CSEA leadership have already begun conversations with the District on the critical issues of reopening schools and budget reductions for the 2020-2021 school year. Our Board of Education will have a study session regarding the District Budget on June 2, 2020.

I invite you to watch both the Budget Study Session on June 2 and School Reopening Study Session on June 16 and listen first hand to the conversations taking place. Both will be streamed live on our Board Meetings YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWKinB4PTb_uskobmwBF8pw/videosYou can also find current information about District news on our website at www.chino.k12.ca.us

We cannot deny that we have much work ahead of us for the sake of our students. But I ask us all to pause for a moment and celebrate our students, staff and our entire CVUSD family for working so diligently together and against odds to make the 2019-2020 school year such a success.

    Sincerely,
    Norm Enfield, Ed.D.
