UPDATE TO THE CVUSD COMMUNITY REGARDING
SCHOOL CLOSURES DUE TO NOVEL CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
June 17, 2020Dear CVUSD Parents and Guardians,
I want to thank you for your patience as my staff and I have continued to analyze all options for CVUSD schools reopening, taking into consideration the guidance and recommendations provided by our national, state and local public health officials. I hope you had an opportunity to watch the Board of Education Study Session on School Reopening yesterday afternoon. If not, the video can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWKinB4PTb_uskobmwBF8pw
While the educational landscape continues to change on a regular basis, we are committed to providing our students the best education in the safest environment.
At this time, Chino Valley Unified School District is planning to reopen all schools as scheduled on August 10 with appropriate safeguards that adhere to the prevailing health orders from the San Bernardino County Department Health at the time of reopening schools.
Our plan for reopening will depend on the four stages the Governor has outlined on California’s Resilience Roadmap.
The return plan for our schools will impact school operations at each stage and will be determined by San Bernardino County’s placement on the Roadmap at the time of reopening of schools. The Roadmap Stages and associated impacts are:
Stage 1
- Distance Learning will be implemented at all grade levels
- Schools will remain closed, and all instruction will be done virtually
- Grading will continue, and student attendance will be monitored
- Activities and Athletics suspended
- No field trips, overnight travel or out of state travel
- No scheduling or attending field trips, overnight travel or out of state travel
Stage 2A
- Distance Learning will be implemented at all grade levels
- Schools will remain closed, and all instruction will be done virtually
- Grading will continue, and student attendance will be monitored
- Activities and Athletics suspended
- No field trips, overnight travel or out of state travel
- No scheduling or attending field trips, overnight travel or out of state travel
Stage 2B
- Distance Learning and Blended Learning will be offered at all grade levels
- In a Blended Learning model, students will be divided into Cohort A or B and will participate in a 50% attendance model with a blend or combination of learning in a classroom setting and work completed independently. This may be enhanced with some online, virtual learning or work completed independently
- Grading will continue, and student attendance will be monitored
- Outdoor play/recess/lunch with modified schedules to allow for appropriate physical distancing while at school
- Indoor assemblies/rallies suspended
- Activities and athletics suspended
- No scheduling or attending field trips, overnight travel or out of state travel
- School offices will be open during Blended Learning
Stage 3
- Blended Learning and Traditional Instruction
- Grading will continue, and student attendance will be monitored
- Outdoor play/recess/lunch with modified schedules to allow for appropriate physical distancing
- Indoor assemblies/rallies suspended
- Modified Activities and athletics may resume without spectators [adherence to health orders will apply]
- No scheduling or attending field trips, overnight travel or out of state travel
- School offices will be open
Stage 4: End of Stay at Home Order
- Traditional Instruction
- Outdoor play/recess/lunch return to normal
- Gradual opening of activities and sports with spectators
- Upon approval, field trips and overnight travel/out of state may be scheduled
- School offices will be open
For families who may not be comfortable returning to school during any of the stages, an additional continuum of learning options will be offered during the 2020-2021 school year
Home-based Independent Study for Grades K-8
- Parent/guardian serves as the teacher during the week, providing lessons based on an instructional guide
- Students may meet virtually or in-person to review the completed work and receive one-on-one or group support provided weekly or monthly
Virtual Program at the Alternative Education Center for Grades 7-12
- Self-paced independent program utilizing an online learning platform
- Designed for independent learners
- Students may meet in-person with a certificated teacher once a month
Home Hospital
- Educational service for students with a medical, temporary disability
- Student meets with a certificated teacher virtually or in-person up to 5 hours aweek
Chino Valley Unified School District’s return plan will be determined by San Bernardino County’s stage on the California’s’ Resilience Roadmap at the time of reopening our schools.
We are planning for the following learning options in the 2020-2021 school year:
- Traditional Instruction: Students participate in a classroom setting.
- Distance Learning: Students participate in structured, full time, online or virtual instruction and learning with a class.
- Blended Learning: Students will be divided into Cohort A or B. Cohorts will participate in a 50% attendance model with a blend or combination of learning in a classroom setting and the remainder of student work completed independently at home. This may be enhanced with online, virtual learning.
We are asking all parents to complete a survey on the options outlined above. The survey can be accessed here: https://survey.k12insight.com/r/zF31Mi
or on the home page of the CVUSD District website here: https://www.chino.k12.ca.us/ Your response to the survey regarding your preference for the learning option will help us anticipate staffing needs for each learning option that may be offered at each stage. Your response is needed by June 24, 2020. A second survey will be sent out in July so that you can confirm your preferred learning option for your child.
We value your input and know that it is our shared commitment to our students that will help make the 2020-2021 school year a success for our entire CVUSD family. We will continue to keep you updated with information as the school reopening plans solidify. Thank you for participating in the survey.
Sincerely,Norm Enfield, Ed.D.Superitendent
